Challenge

Event organizers are always looking for ways to capture the success of their events. But many tools only offer the possibility to analyse the event after it happened. VOIVOI closes the gap and creates an engaging service (web and app) for event organizers to analyze their event in real-time, by using images and text the audience is sharing. Note: This project was developed before Instagram became popular in Germany 😉.

  • Creating an engaging and playful survey for event evaluation.
  • Designing a scalable system for multiple events, with images and text.
  • Developing the front- and backend system for the platform.

The audience can collect their impressions by sharing pictures and comments.

Solution

From the beginning the service was designed to simplify event evaluation. I was responsible for the full design process of the application: through lo-fi prototypes and user testing the interaction was shaped to fit organizer's and audience's needs. Early versions were tested in local events with users and organizers. I prototyped with different technologies before developing the full infrastructure.

Organizers
question

The organizers question: They define topics for the event, which are meant as questions and can be answered with a picture and a comment.
Each topic can only be answered once, the topic isn‘t available anymore after the user sent the answer.
The system shows the results: While the event is happening both can find a visitor-generating documentation on the official VOIVOI Website or in the App.

Audience
answers

The visitors answer: what should be documented? They can take a picture of an object, people or a moment to answer the questions. The mass will create its own view of the event. The visitors fill out the survey while being on the event with their smartphones.

An integrated calendar lets the user find out about current or upcoming events. The user answers for a question and shares the impression.

Within the app and the website it is possible to search, filter, and to find out what is gaining the most attention from the audience.

Results

After testing the concept with small local events, the service gained traction and was used with a wider audience. On events with 1000+ visitors a day, the organizers enjoyed the real-time feedback as they saw how their event was performing.
The service was also used by the parliament participants of the EU project ENAGE, which hosted networking events to connect telcom with government representatives across Europe.
